Know Your Rights CA is a free, bilingual resource created to help California parents and guardians understand their rights within the special education system. We believe that every family deserves clear, accessible information — regardless of language or background.
We translate complex federal and state special education laws — including IDEA, Section 504, and the California Education Code — into plain-language guides, real-world scenarios, and actionable steps. Our content covers everything from requesting an initial evaluation to filing a due process complaint.
Our primary audience is California parents and guardians of children with disabilities or suspected disabilities, ages 3–22. We especially aim to reach Spanish-speaking families who may face additional barriers to accessing information about their children's educational rights.
This website provides general educational information and is not a substitute for legal advice. Every child's situation is unique. If you need help with a specific issue, we encourage you to contact a special education advocate, parent training center, or attorney in your area.
We are committed to making this site accessible to all users. The site follows WCAG 2.1 guidelines, supports screen readers, keyboard navigation, and reduced-motion preferences. If you encounter any accessibility issues, please let us know.
